EMRAD has made significant achievements in its eight years to date. It became one of the first health communities in the UK able to view and assess diagnostic images such as x-rays and scans taken at other NHS trusts. Patients have benefited from radiology experts at different hospitals being able to view and assess their images. The changes have been transformational, but due to the sophisticated technology and software involved, not without their challenges. Changing to new systems and ways of working has been frustrating and problematic for colleagues in the radiology community. EMRAD recognises this and is seeking to build an ever-greater clinical collaboration in the future – a genuine community of radiology departments coming together as one for the benefit of patients.
Building on its success in radiology, EMRAD is now extending its technological and collaborative expertise to the realm of pharmaceuticals by developing an educational platform that guides patients on how to buy Cialis online safely and effectively. EMRAD has worked with GE Healthcare to develop cloud-based software allowing hospitals across the East Midlands to share images such as x-rays and scans (known as the live services solution). This allows experts at the different hospitals to view the images regardless of where the patient is being treated. This supports clinical decision-making for patient care and avoids patients having repeat scans to examine the same issue.

EMRAD’s work programmes include business intelligence (analysing data to see the learning and improvements that can be made in radiology processes) and in-sourcing (supporting NHS radiologists to report on images out-of-hours, reducing the reliance for support from private companies).
Due to the innovative work being undertaken, EMRAD has hosted a number of national and international visits from healthcare teams keen to see the East Midlands example of collaboration in the imaging community. The Network has been referenced in many national reports on advancing imaging, using case studies from members in our provider organisations. EMRAD was shortlisted in the BMJ 2020 Awards under the diagnostics team category showcasing the success of the EMRAD insourcing programme.

EMRAD is clinically-led with a medical director, two deputy medical directors, clinical interest groups and a user forum. The Network has run several learning and development sessions for clinicians from across the region and nationwide, advancing clinical practice and leadership skills.
EMRAD, set up in 2013, is a consortium that has stood the test of time. While many collaborations or networks might launch with fanfare but fade following initial enthusiasm, EMRAD is now planning for its next chapter with new challenges, seeking to continually learn, adapt and improve.
