Modern healthcare relies on rapid access to and interpretation of imaging examinations which are integral to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care.
But in recent years, demand for radiological imaging has increased dramatically. Demand for complex imaging scans such as CT and MRI has increased nationally by 10% each year for the past five years.
This, coupled with a national shortfall in the recruitment of radiologists, has led to significant delays in patients receiving their results. Radiology departments currently report they are unable to recruit the staff they need. The current shortfall of 1,104 radiologists nationally is forecast to rise to 1,867 by 2023. Six out of ten consultant posts nationally remain unfilled at 12 months.
Clinical radiologists, both diagnostic and interventional, are fundamental to the management of patients. Prompt and appropriate imaging, diagnosis and intervention improve patient outcomes and avoid unnecessary procedures.
