iRefer Clinical Decision Support (CDS) integrates the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) iRefer guidelines, along with best local practice, into existing electronic referral workflows.

Guidance is provided at the point of ordering that supports clinicians in making decisions, recommending the most appropriate imaging test for each patient’s given clinical scenario.

Updates can be made quickly and easily in the light of any changes e.g. National guidance or local pathways.

iRefer has been deployed for imaging referrals from Primary Care (mainly GPs) into Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), Sherwood Forest Hospitals (SFH), Kettering General Hospital (KGH) and Chesterfield Royal Hospital (CRH), with deployments for the remaining EMRAD Trusts in progress.

SFH, CRH and United Lincolnshire Hospitals (ULH) also plan to deploy iRefer CDS for Secondary Care referrals (i.e. from referrers working within Trusts).

Analysis of data from Trusts where iRefer CDS has been deployed indicates:

  • Increased numbers of patients per day getting the right test, first time
  • Reduced numbers of rejections of inappropriate referrals by Imaging Departments
